Apple CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly “broken the silence on future products with regards to AR” making numerous comments about AR being the next big thing for Apple.

The company may already have over 1000 engineers working on a project in Israel relating to AR, including

  • PrimeSense; a 3D sensing company in Tel Aviv
  • Metaio; software technology that provides augmented reality solutions
  • RealFacel; cyber security and facial recognition.

According to Milunovich, CEO of UBS, Apple is the winner in AR simply because a large number of people already own an Apple product. Apple can just implement the AR technology on to its products. AR, augmented reality, brings out the components of the digital world into a person’s perceived real world. With this technology, one is able to interact with their digitally modified surrounding world. Earlier this month, in an interview with The Independent, Cook compares AR to the Iphone, in that it’s made “for everyone”. “I think AR is that big. Its huge”. UBS expects Apple’s new AR product to debut later this year. The product is said to include a 3D mapping and possibly an AR software development kit.

Tim Cook, on the other hand, says to have patience. There are “things to discover before AR is good enough for the mainstream.”  He mentions that “augmented reality will take some time to get right, but I do think that it’s profound.”
