DDD stock analysis

3D Systems (DDD) provides comprehensive 3D products and services, including 3D printers, print materials, on-demand parts services and digital design tools. Its ecosystem supports advanced applications from the product design shop to the factory floor to the operating room. 3D Systems’ precision healthcare capabilities include simulation, Virtual Surgical Planning, and printing of medical and dental devices as well as patient-specific surgical instruments. As the originator of 3D printing and a shaper of future 3D solutions, 3D Systems has spent its 30 year history enabling professionals and companies to optimize their designs, transform their workflows, bring innovative products to market and drive new business models.

DDD Stock Analysis

On October 6, 2016, Vetr raised their rating on DDD from a “buy” rating to a “strong-buy” rating with a $20.54 target price. As you can see from the above graph on DDD, the company has been in a downtrend for some time now, but since recovered around August, where they essentially broke-out of the trend. Around April of 2016, DDD generated a golden cross which is a “bullish breakout pattern formed from a crossover involving a security’s short-term moving average (such as the 15-day moving average) breaking above its long-term moving average (such as 50-day moving average) or resistance level” (Retrieved from Investopedia). The golden cross is used as a marker for a bull market that is ahead.

Interestingly, Renaissance Technologies, one of the most prestigious hedge funds in the world, holds a $21.4 million position in 3D Systems Corp. Because of Renaissance’s track record with constant growth and almost no losses, their stake in DDD is particularly noteworthy.

3D Printing Revolutionizing Healthcare

3D Systems primarily caters to the healthcare field with their 3D printing capabilities. On November. 23, 2016, the company released a preview of its D2P™ (DICOM-to-Print) software. DICOM stands for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine and the software makes it easy and quick to produce patient specific 3D molds. This is revolutionary because this software is capable of making surgical procedure planning as well as anatomical 3D models swiftly.

The advantages of using a 3D printer for surgical planning are endless, for example, if there are patient specific molds being printed, the doctors can use them as a guideline for surgery. In other words, the model can show exactly how the organ in question looks, where exactly all of the veins and muscles are placed, and can use this as a map to adequately perform the surgery once the patient is actually on the operating table. It’s very much like a study guide for a test. The guide has all of the answers laid out before you, and the student or in this case, the surgeon, can study the guide until the information becomes familiar. No patient is the same, every person has different reactions within their body, and even their organs can be different in shape and form. Using a 3D patient specific model can eliminate surprises that could negatively effect the operation and it can also help the doctor figure out exactly what kind of operation they would be looking at instead of opening a patient up and then deciding on a game plan.

The models are also useful to show the patient what the doctor plans to do during surgery. For example, the patient can come in for a consultation and the doctor can show the patient exactly what they will do with a model of that patients specific organ. This revolutionary printer will also revolutionize healthcare education, because 3D models are also useful for teaching purposes, as they show exactly what the organs in a body look like and can map the differences rather than looking at 2D pictures of different organs. The students can look at the organ and study it, just like a surgeon before a procedure. It may also limit need for cadavers because the students will be able to look directly at a printed version of an organ, which also allows them to peer inside of the organ as well. Another advantage to the 3D Systems printing is that they can make “metallic implants and instrumentation used for orthopedic, spinal, CMF, dental and veterinary applications” (Retrieved from 3D Systems).

While there are many uses for 3D printing, the impact on healthcare is the most remarkable. Other industries that 3D Systems cater to are

As shown from the table below, you can see that the I Know First algorithm is bullish on DDD for the short and long term.

How to interpret this diagram:

Signal

This indicator represents the predicted movement/trend of the asset; not a percentage or specific target price. The signal strength indicates how much the current price deviates from what the system considers an equilibrium or “fair” price.

Predictability (P)

This value is obtained by calculating the average correlation coefficient between the past predictions and the actual asset movement for three discrete time periods. The averaging gives more weight to more recent performances. As the machine keeps learning, the values of P generally increase.

Conclusion

3D printing still has a long way to go because it needs to be integrated into hospitals all over the world. But as indicated by the I Know First algorithm, DDD specifically will continue growing with time. The golden cross the company has attained in the market also corroborates the algorithm’s predictions, as the golden cross indicates a rally for the company.
